Amy Patterson asked:

If you are anything like me and like to make plans now to ensure that your going to be financially secure in the future, you might want to know why I got a free copy of my credit report. Even if you don’t have a car or a mortgage yet, it is important to know exactly what is on your credit report. Every major financial decision you are going to make in the future is determined by your credit score.

If you are wondering about your credit the first thing to do is obtain a copy of your free annual credit report. You can get these with TransUnion, Experian and Equifax. All 3 of these companies are obligated by law to give each individual a copy of their report once a year. These free credit reports you get annually are a good insight into your credit,by offering a log of all your accounts and your record of payments you have made in that year. However, they do not give you your 3 digit credit score. This 3 digit credit score is what reputable financial institutions are going to judge you by when you make an application for a loan or credit.

If you are planning on making a large purchase, it is important to check your credit report. You need to check your report at least six months before you even decide on making an application. If any inconsistencies come up in your credit report this should give you a good amount of time to adjust them before any company sees your credit score. There are things you can do to correct your credit score. Paying off some of your debt and making one-off payments are 2 good ways of bumping up your credit score. Another way to keep your score up to par is keep any accounts open, even if you don’t use the credit card anymore.

Identity theft is also a good reason to look into your credit history. This crime is out of control, and checking your credit report regularly is a fantastic way to keep identity thieves at bay. Report any unusual activity right away to the relevant companies. Catching things quickly can save you thousands, and can keep your credit from being ruined forever. I am so pleased I decided to get a free copy of my credit report. There is no excuse to be uninformed these days. Getting your own free credit report can even save you money when negotiating interest amounts on your loans!

Zach Ford asked:

Because of recent laws passed by the Federal Trade Commission, all major credit reporting agencies in the United States, including Equifax, TransUnion, Experian (formerly TRW), are required to provide consumers (that’s you!) with a totally free copy of their credit reports, if requested, up to once every 12 months. This means that you can acquire a 100% free credit report from any of these three major credit reporting companies once every year. It has never been easier or cheaper to stay on top of your credit report and score than today.

Everyone should check their credit report! It’s FREE

There really is no good reason why you shouldn’t check your credit report, at least once a year. Knowing what is in your credit report and your credit score can save you time and money when shopping for a loan or lease. Also, it is an excellent idea to frequently check your credit report for errors, out of date information, fraud, or identity theft. All of these wrongful entries can negatively effect your over all credit score, tarnishing your reputation and relationships with banks and lenders.

All three of the major credit reporting agencies can be contacted for a free annual credit report by going to their official website: http://www.AnnualCreditReport.com. They may also be contacted individually, online or by regular postal mail; however, be aware that when going to one of their individual websites ( http://www.experian.com, http://www.equifax.com, http://www.transunion.com ) they will require you to also sign up for an account and other services to receive your credit report. So your best bet is to not deal with them through their commercial sites, and instead use the http://www.annualcreditreport.com site.

How Do I Get a Free Online Credit Check?

Jon

Zach Ford asked:

As a result of recently passed laws, the Federal Trade Commission now requires all of the major national credit reporting bureaus to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, if requested, up to once every 12 months.

The three major credit reporting agencies in the USA are TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian (formerly TRW) And now you can obtain a high quality copy of their records of your financial history, for FREE! Never before has it been so easy to keep track of your credit score and credit report than now.

Everyone should check their credit report! It’s FREE

So, how can you obtain one of these free credit report? Easy! All of the three major credit agencies in the US can be sent a request for a free credit report by visiting their official federal website: http://www.AnnualCreditReport.com – They may also be contacted individually at their private websites: http://www.experian.com, http://www.equifax.com, http://www.transunion.com – However, when visiting their private sites you may be charged a fee for additional services and fees, so your best option is to visit the official federal site.

Checking your credit score once a year is an excellent way to stay on top of your finical standing. Looking over your credit report for errors, out of date information, and identity theft is an absolute necessity, something every person should be sure to do. Knowing what’s on your credit report and your FICO credit score can help save you thousands of dollars and countless headaches, when you are shopping for a loan, mortgage, credit card, or car lease.

How Do I Get a Free Online Credit Check?

Jonathan

Lyn Collier asked:

You don’t have to sign up for a trial membership of a credit protection service to get free copies of your credit reports. There a few one-stop websites where you can order credit reports from all three credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax, and Trans Union. It’s easy. One site, Annual Credit Report, is even recommended by Consumer advocate Clark Howard as well as the Consumer Credit Counseling Service.

By the way, your “credit report” is not the same thing as your “credit score.” The reports will give your credit activity only – not your FICO score. The FICO score is a number that is generated using info from all three agencies. It is a product of Fair Isaac Credit Org. (FICO) and must be purchased – $15.95

When you get to the site and start clicking around to request your free report, a few things might concern you. The main thing…and it is kind of unavoidable is the request for you to enter your Social Security number. If you have strong reservations about entering your SS number online, you can just skip the rest of the article and look up the 800 number and do the transaction on the phone. But either way, you will to have to provide your social security number.

Back to the online request. At some point during your online request for a free credit report , each bureau will try to sell you their products. Stay focused.

Here is the protocol for Experian for example: (and they are all pretty much alike so I will spare you the details on the other 2)

Step 1 on the Experian site will offer to sell you your Experian credit score for $5.95. Each bureau assigns a score, but their scores do not represent your FICO score. The FICO score is the one that most creditors use. I don’t recommend buying a credit score from anyone other than FICO. it’s the only one that counts. When asked if you want to purchase your “Experian” score, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on “No thanks, I just want my free annual credit report.”

You will cruise through the steps pretty quickly. The only time you might have a problem is if you don’t answer the identification verification questions correctly. If you answer incorrectly you will be given a toll-free number to call where your i.d. can be verified manually.

Once you are done on the Experian site, you will be prompted to return to the Annual Credit Report site and continue with the other credit bureaus.

All the sites will walk you through the same process offering to sell you their products along the way. Remember, your goal is to get free credit reports, not buy stuff. Follow the prompts and you will instantly get your three credit reports free of charge.

Glen

Michael V asked:

I am a college student of age 18. I recently applied for a Citi credit card but it was rejected saying (in email)

o A garnishment, attachment, foreclosure, collection
action or judgment was recorded on your credit bureau
report.
o A delinquent credit obligation(s), either paid
or unpaid, was recorded on your credit bureau report.

They got the report from Equifax credit information service.
This confuses me for I have never once owned a credit card nor have I had to pay bills or anything of the sort that I would/could be late for.

Stolen Identity?

So I went to annualcreditreport and tried geting my report from all 3 credit bureaus

Experian says We’re sorry. We experienced a system problem and we are unable to provide your personal credit report for online viewing at this time. You may want to try again later.

Transunion has me on a page that says your order is being processed come back in 30 min (its been 6 hours).

With Equifax I get to a page that says this.
We’re sorry, for your protection we are unable to deliver your FACT Act Equifax Free Annual Credit Report on the internet. There are a number of reasons that we may be unable to fulfill your request online. You may have a Security Freeze on your credit file, an Active Duty Military or Fraud Alert, or the identification information submitted online may not match the information on file. The following link will lead you to a form that is not screen-readable at this time.
What do you think? What should I do?
One last thing, On the bottom of the Equifax report it says NOTE: If you have a Security Freeze on your file, you must include your 10 digit PIN along with the information requested above. Where can I find my 10 digit pin and what exactly is it?

Leroy
