Tony Banks asked:

If there’s any one particular thing that many consumers want other than increasing their score and cleaning negative accounts from their credit report, it is the need to know what the reporting agencies use to churn-out the figures on their reports.

A step by step approach will do here. FICO represents Fair Isaac Corporation and it is the company that is responsible for developing the method used by the credit agencies to translate data fed to them by creditors into numbers.

Equifax, Transunion, and Experian are the big three bureaus that keep records of loan applications you make, debts owed, unpaid collections, missed and late payments, repossessions, foreclosures, inquiries, bankruptcies and other types of financial delinquencies. They are licensed to operate and are regulated by the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Even though the FICO standard is what these bureaus use, they have modified the method to suit their organizational standard and this is why it is possible for you to get your report from annualcreditreport.com. You will notice that your three scores are not the same. It is also another reason why you should not work on only one or two, but all three reports when repairing your file.

The three bureaus derive your score from the percentage of your financial activities and this is stated below:

Your pay history: 35%
The amounts you owe in debt: 30%
The duration of your credit history: 15%
Types of credit you use: 10%
New lines of credit: 10%

This is an account of the aspects of your file and their percentages will tell you their potential impact and importance in how your FICO score is calculated.

The law, however, enables a consumer to repair his/her own file as some people will prefer mending their own fence than calling a bricklayer to do it for them. Getting one’s hands on a complete credit repair kit will help you clean off errors and negatives off your file, increase your score, and more…

Milton

Zach Ford asked:

Over 10 millions Americans check their credit online each year, and for good reason. Being familiar with your credit score is one of the most important things you can do to maintain a healthy financial life. There are tons of different factors that go into calculating your score, sometimes there can even be errors that were not your fault. By keeping a close eye on your credit rating, you can detect any unusual activity and quickly figure out what is going on. So join the millions who have already discovered where they stand, and request a free credit report today!

Your credit score is a three digit number, between 300 and 850, based on your past and current financial activities which are stored in your credit report. A score higher than 700 is considered to be good credit, and should be your goal if you are not already be above 700. Your credit report keeps track of all your bill payments, credit card balances, amount of debt, and many other factors which are used when calculating your credit rating. The most important of these factors is whether or not you make your payments on time, so be sure to keep on top of your bills.

Many people do not know, but you actually have three different credit scores, maintained by three different credit reporting companies. TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax are the three largest credit agencies in the United States, and they each calculate your score a little bit differently. TransUnion uses the FICO score, Experian uses their PLUS score system, and Equifax provides the ScorePower score. It is important to use a service that provides you with all three major credit scores, as this will give you a more complete view you your credit’s standing.

By knowing where your score stands, you can better understand what kind of loans you can receive and what interest rates you should receive. You can also see which areas of your finances need work, which is the first step toward improving your credit. Having a high score will reduce you interest rates which can save you thousands of dollars every year.

Make it as a top priority to get a copy of your credit score and credit report, it can be very helpful to you.

Michele

Hector Milla asked:

Most of your needs with a credit bureau can be done over the internet with their websites. However, if a problem arises with your report or certain information is not accepted by the site, you will need to make a phone call. It is a good idea to be able to find the phone numbers of each bureau quickly if you need them in order to get the matter settled as fast as possible.

Transunion 1-800-916-8800

TransUnion is one of the big three credit bureaus that allow for one free report every year. TransUnion was a pioneer in the field, although they were not the first established. TransUnion had the first online database and lead the way for online credit reporting. Now, most reporting is done online. TransUnion has had some troubles though, particularly with a high number of inaccuracies in reporting. One study showed that 79% of their reports had at least some form of inaccuracy. They also were sued for selling private information.

Equifax 1-800-685-1111

Equifax is the oldest of the three credit bureaus. It is also the most widely used. This means that people looking to repair their score will often work with Equifax first. They have had issues in the past when it came to privacy and giving out personal information. Because of this trouble, they have worked closely with government officials to make sure the current privacy laws are relevant and are working for the people.

Experian 1-888-397-3742

Experian is the only agency that does not use the FICO score to establish your credit score. Experian uses the PLUS system. The PLUS system uses the same factors as the FICO score. They weigh the factors a little differently and in a way that is more consumer friendly. They may be the easiest bureau to approach when attempting to fix your score because they are trying to get an accurate reflection of what is going on. Their major trouble with the law came when they tried to automatically enroll people who came for a free credit report to their paid monitoring service.

These three credit bureaus will give you one free credit report each year. There is a lot you can learn from these reports and everyone should take advantage of this great opportunity. For those trying desperately to raise their credit score, it might be a good idea to try out a paid monitoring service, at least for a few months. This way, you can see exactly which of your efforts are paying off and effecting your score. Even those with good credit would benefit from credit monitoring in order to catch fraud. Either way, be sure to get your free reports.

Travis

Josh D Paul asked:

Credit reporting agencies collect credit-related information and sell it to businesses and consumers. They are also commonly called credit bureaus in the United States.

There are many of these agencies in the country, but the three main ones are Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Most creditors and lenders will report their data to one or all three of these bureaus.

The largest and the oldest credit reporting agency is Equifax. The smallest is TransUnion. Experian is headquartered in Ireland. It started its operations in the U.S. when it purchased TRW Information Services in 1996.

Equifax, Experian and TransUnion all have their own bureau credit reports. These reports are compiled from the consumer credit histories gathered from lenders. Because creditors do not always submit their data uniformly to the same bureaus, credit reports will may be different.

Each agency also has its own credit score. Equifax and TransUnion use the FICO score algorithm to calculate their scores. The FICO scoring model is the most prevalent one used in the country. Over 90% of banks and other financial institutions use a FICO score to access a person’s credit worthiness. Experian uses its own proprietary scoring model.

The United States government has a federal law that protects consumers from unfair credit reporting business practices. This law is called the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and the Federal Trades Commission (FTC) oversees the enforcement of it.

One stipulation of the FCRA is that it allows consumers to request a free copy of each of their bureau credit reports once every 12 months. Requests for Equifax, Experian and TransUnion reports must be made at AnnualCreditReport.com.

Free access to bureau credit scores are not included as part of the FCRA. They can however be purchased for a nominal fee or are often provided for free with certain online promotions.

It is important to periodically check one’s credit report for reporting errors and fraudulent activity. Such instances can hurt one’s credit profile. Regularly diagnosing one’s report may also lead to better management of one’s finances.

Knowing one’s credit score is equally as important. Because many financial institutions use scores as risk indicators, preventing a low assessment of one’s score and open doors of opportunities for a better lifestyle.

Paula

Lyn Collier asked:

You don’t have to sign up for a trial membership of a credit protection service to get free copies of your credit reports. There a few one-stop websites where you can order credit reports from all three credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax, and Trans Union. It’s easy. One site, Annual Credit Report, is even recommended by Consumer advocate Clark Howard as well as the Consumer Credit Counseling Service.

By the way, your “credit report” is not the same thing as your “credit score.” The reports will give your credit activity only – not your FICO score. The FICO score is a number that is generated using info from all three agencies. It is a product of Fair Isaac Credit Org. (FICO) and must be purchased – $15.95

When you get to the site and start clicking around to request your free report, a few things might concern you. The main thing…and it is kind of unavoidable is the request for you to enter your Social Security number. If you have strong reservations about entering your SS number online, you can just skip the rest of the article and look up the 800 number and do the transaction on the phone. But either way, you will to have to provide your social security number.

Back to the online request. At some point during your online request for a free credit report , each bureau will try to sell you their products. Stay focused.

Here is the protocol for Experian for example: (and they are all pretty much alike so I will spare you the details on the other 2)

Step 1 on the Experian site will offer to sell you your Experian credit score for $5.95. Each bureau assigns a score, but their scores do not represent your FICO score. The FICO score is the one that most creditors use. I don’t recommend buying a credit score from anyone other than FICO. it’s the only one that counts. When asked if you want to purchase your “Experian” score, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on “No thanks, I just want my free annual credit report.”

You will cruise through the steps pretty quickly. The only time you might have a problem is if you don’t answer the identification verification questions correctly. If you answer incorrectly you will be given a toll-free number to call where your i.d. can be verified manually.

Once you are done on the Experian site, you will be prompted to return to the Annual Credit Report site and continue with the other credit bureaus.

All the sites will walk you through the same process offering to sell you their products along the way. Remember, your goal is to get free credit reports, not buy stuff. Follow the prompts and you will instantly get your three credit reports free of charge.

Glen

Truman Weiss asked:

Find a Free Credit Report

In todays world at a time when it is virtually impossible to purchase a car, hire a house, buy a house or maybe get insurance without having good credit, it is more crucial than ever to not only know what credit history you have but also to keep a watch on your credit report, in order to make sure someone else isn’t stealing your identification or using your profile. Nowadays you can easily get a free credit report from a variety number| selection} of different websites which you can see below.

A Credit report and credit reporting is important for anyone who wants to appreciate their credit and the money ramifications it can have in someone’s life. If you need to get the best credit card deals and card offers, then it is vital to have a high score, which you can earn over time by making your payments on time and not getting yourself too far into debt. It is a good idea to pull a communication on yourself at least once a year to see what your score is, to check for erroneous information that might have been reported and to check of suspicious activity that might be an illustration of identity theft or Visa card fraud.

When you request your free credit score to check your history and record, you’ll discover that all of your basic and crucial private info is listed, as well as all of the corporations that have granted you any type of credit over the years. You will see an outline score, called the FICO score, and this grade is a method for companies to quickly get a snapshot of how credit-worthy you are.

On your’free of charge’ report you may also see that there is detailed payment history for the various sorts of accounts you have opened, such as your mortgage, your major mastercards, your retailer cards, your student credit and loans, and other types of accounts that you make regular payments on. Generally the report shows how long the account has been open, the amount of on-time payments, the amount of late or missed payments, the balance, and other relevant information concerning your accounts.

These details are helpful to any bank or financial institution that you go to for any kind of financing so they can efficiently see what sort of risk you could be. The level of risk that they regard you to be, based on your score and report, will generally establish the interest rate that you are offered for visa cards, mortgages and auto loans. At the same time, most auto insurance corporations review these scores and those with better scores will get a better insurance rate that those with low FICO scores.

Here is another reason why it is a brilliant idea to keep a tight watch on your score and profile by getting a free credit report constantly is that a low score can make it tricky when you go to hire a studio or perhaps apply for a new job. More companies are relying on the scores to make calls about their customers so you must treat your score as a financial asset and guard it with care.

For a Free Instant Credit Report:

Find a Free Credit Report

.

Denise
