free 3 credit reports – score

get information on credit bureaus

Everyone is entitled to a free credit report once per year. Why does this NOT include the credit score?

Mick D asked:

Do not want to mess with the freecreditreport.com B.S. !! I went to the “Official” source on the ftc.gv site http://www.ftc.gov/freereports. Did this last month. Decided that wanted to see credit report for all 3 but did not include credit score. The individual companies wanted extra for the credit score (Experian, Equifax, Transunion).

Because those are two different things. Do you want a free toaster as well??? Just because one thing is free, DOES NOT mean that they have to offer you other things for free as well.

Credit scores are proprietary products and Congress handled them as such – giving away a score would be like Ford being forced to give away a car – the information used however, which is free, is not proprietary – the Bureaus do nothing to create that information, they just collect it.

The purpose of the free credit report is for you to be able to review your credit information to spot mistakes. The reporting agencies want to give you an opportunity to correct any mistakes that are affecting your credit. Your credit score is not something you need to know in order to correct mistakes, so the credit agencies make you pay a small fee ($6.95 I believe) to get your actual credit score. You can also get your score for free by applying for a loan, especially if you get turned down.

It’s frustrating, isn’t it – they make decisions about you that you don’t have access to! I have a good example. Statistics on the back of a baseball card are free and anyone can see them but the actual card they are on is protected and must be purchased. The information is free but the way they compile it is not.

There are several good credit score estimators on the internet. If you know the items on your credit report then you can just type those in and get a good estimate.

That’s the way it works. If you would like a free estimate of your credit score, check out the sites below. They will give you their version of a credit score for free. It is not the official FICO score that lenders use, but getting scores from these three sites should give you a very good idea of where you stand and an approximation of what your true FICO score would be.

you can get it for free by opening a new account as there is a loop hole that forces them to get you the numbers
